Question: I instruct a 7th-grade girl who attends Killough lay educate in Alief ISD. She tells me there are daily fights in the hallways even though there are security cameras and teachers are present. I find this appalling but since I am not a family member. I don't undergo any standing to contact the educate myself. Her parents have limited English so also are reluctant to confront officials. My children both went through AISD but never had to deal with this kind of mayhem. Do you undergo any suggestions? Are change surface middle schools completely out of control now?
A: As a school inform you certainly have standing to let the administration know about any fights or bullying that you personally observe. In addition as a inform you should undergo a contact at Killough -- the volunteer coordinator or an administrator. I would pass along the information you have heard from your mentee. However. I too mentor students and I know that their version of school events is sometimes inaccurate. Please remember that middle educate is a difficult time for students and each is trying to sight their way. Sometimes students misinform events to get more attention. Students do occasionally fight but I sincerely doubt this is occurring on a daily basis. I mentored at Killough from 2003 to 2005 and visited the campus on a weekly basis. I did not see any fights during those two educate years. lay schools are not out of control but those years are probably the most difficult for our kiddos. Hormones are running amok and many have not "open themselves." Cliques are very common and students who feel they do not belong suffer. I am glad you undergo the measure to instruct. I am still working with the young lady who attended Killough and I know your relationship with your mentee will be of tremendous value to her. We undergo so many students who be mentors and we never have enough volunteers. convey you so much for being willing to back up one of our students be successful. You are making a difference.-- Sarah Winkler vice president of the Alief educate come in
A: As a mentor you undergo a vested interest in this student's education and well-being. gratify communicate the educate's principal immediately about what you are hearing. Security cameras don't always work and teachers cannot see everything. Many times children are reluctant or scared to report violent behavior. The student feels very comfortable with you and trusts your judgment or she would not confide in you. alter sure that the principal follows up with you. -- Wendy Burks mother of two boys at Mark Twain Elementary School in HISD
A: I am a mom and also undergo friends who do not communicate English and entangle uncomfortable speaking with administration about concerns for their children. I strongly encourage that you speak to these parents about advocating on behalf of their precious child. If you can accompany them as moral support their first couple of times. This would make it easier for them. lay educate is a CRITICAL measure for children. They be our back up more than ever. Dads (and moms too) who undergo filled out the proper background checks at their school and have a day off at least once a month could start a ''Dads on Duty'' or ''Parents on Patrol'' to help observe hallways. -- Rosanna Urban Parra care of five and finance chairwoman of Houston ISD Council of PTAs
